ABC Tryout FAQs

Q: Tryouts make me nervous!

A: Tryouts are a natural part of being an athlete. ABC is always a fun and supportive atmosphere. No matter what happens, you will come away motivated and encouraged. Just trying out is a great experience in itself and will enrich your athletic experience. We encourage everyone to try out.

Q: Who is going to try out?

A: Everyone. It doesn’t matter if you have just arrived in town or have been on ABC’s Elite Team for years. Every athlete must try out to be on a team. Inclusion on an ABC team is not automatic. We encourage all athletes to try out.

Q: Why is ABC asking kids to try out?

A: Tryouts are a natural part of any athletic team. More importantly, it gives the ABC Coaches a chance to individually meet with and assess each child. Assessment provides us with important information and helps us prepare a more tailored training program for our athletes, both individually and as a whole. It is also an excellent opportunity  for parents to meet with us and ask questions or have a conversation.

Q: What if I try out and don’t make it or don’t make the team I want to be on?

A: Our coaches at ABC have the experience to place you exactly where you should be. We are the only climbing gym that focuses just on youth, and our coaches are also the only coaches in the area that focus exclusively on youth. Placing you exactly where you should be will help you grow in this sport. Kids who are pushed too hard too fast never last and kids who aren’t fully engaged get bored and drop out.

Q: What if I think I should be on a higher-level team than where I was placed?

A: Show us how wrong we were — that’s up to you. We’d love to be pleasantly surprised.

Q: What if I try out and don’t make any teams?

A: ABC has a offers so many programs and one of them is meant for you.

Q: What if I have potential but not a lot of training?

A: ABC can spot potential. We love potential. A good attitude is also important as we truly are  a “team” and we provide encouragement for each other, for other teams, and show respect for our sponsors and coaches. An ABC athlete is a respectful athlete. In turn, we will respect and listen to you as well.

Q: Should I train for tryouts?

A: Training is always a good idea. It’s important to have goals and to work towards them. Check the ABC website (ww.abckidsclimbing.com) for open gym times or contact one of our coaches for a private one-on-one coaching session.

Q: I have a question that wasn’t answered here.

A: Email Coach Robyn Raboutou at robyn@teamabcboulder.com.
