He sent his first V13 only 9 months ago, and now ABC Elite Athlete Michael O’Rourke has done his first V14!
Today, November 11th, 2012, Michael finished off his short-term project when he sent Mirror Reality at Rocky Mountain National Park. Mirror is a Daniel Woods problem that has also been climbed by Jimmy Webb and Paul Robinson.
Nice Job Michael!
Here is a short edit of the 2012 Yank n’ Yard at Stone Age Climbing Gym in New Mexico. Team ABC Elite athletes Michael O’Rourke and Megan Mascarenas won the Men’s and Women’s Open.
Here are some more photos and the highlights video from last weekend’s SBC Pro Tour. Most are from Beau Kahler, and you can see his whole album on facebook at – UBC Pro Tour Seattle 2012
Again congratulations to Mike O’Rourke for his 3rd place finish!
43 men entered the Men’s Pro Open category at the Seattle Bouldering Challenge Pro, a Unified Bouldering Challenge Pro Open Tour stop event. This is the first time this event has been in Seattle, and the purse was huge! $10,000 total for the open categories!
Of the 43 male entrants, only 20 advanced to semifinals. Team ABC had three representatives at the comp. Coach Rob D’Anastasio, who qualified in 4th; Coach Garrett Gregor, who qualified in 10th; and Elite Team athlete Michael O’Rourke, who qualified in 13th.
After semis the field was moved around considerably, with Coach Rob D’Anastasio finishing in 10th and Coach Garrett Gregor finishing in 16th.
Michael was in 5th after semifinals, so he was one of 6 men to go on to finals.
The scores were constantly updating and there was no live feed so it was hard to tell what was happening from moment to moment, but when all was said and done Michael had climbed very well and ended up in a very proud 3rd place.
Great job Michael!!!
Here are the scores from the finals.
Nice job to all who competed, especially Josh Larson who has taken his first major pro comp win. The scores are very close and it’s clear that all the competitors gave great efforts.

As promised, here is another exiting report from a Team ABC members’ Spring Break 2012 climbing trip. For installment 2 we have:
Stefan Lavender & Michael O’Rourke
For Spring Break 2012 Stefan and Michael headed to Joe’s Valley where they ticked many classics as well as an impressive number of V10s and V11s. Michael was recognized on the front page of 8a for his accomplishment of 7 V11 problems over the course of the spring break week. 3 of Michael’s V11 sends happened on the same day, but perhaps even more impressive is his first day in Joe’s in which he climbed 2 V9s, 4 V10s, and 2 V11s! His accomplishments have brought him to 6th place All Time and 4th place currently in the World Junior Bouldering Ranking on 8a.
Stefan also sent nearly a handful of V11s and several V10s and V9s and is sitting at 14th All Time and 8th currently in the World Junior Bouldering Ranking on 8a. This is an impressive week of bouldering, especially for two boys who cannot yet sign their own waivers at climbing gyms!
There aren’t many pics of the Joe’s trip, but here are a couple of Michael and Stefan taken by their buddy and Spot Comp Team member Sean Morgan.

If you are interested please check out their 8a cards for their full trip ticklists and the comments they made for each ascent.
Nice job guys!!!
Team ABC is proud to welcome Michael O’Rourke to the team. Michael has been climbing since 2002 when he tried it out at his local health club in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois. He quickly became hooked and went climbing as much as he could. A year later the gym – Hidden Peak – started a youth team and he eagerly joined. He began climbing more and more and soon traveled to other gyms to attend competitions. After nearly a decade of climbing, Michael moved to Boulder in the summer of 2011 to further his training.
Michael quickly made his presence known in the Boulder scene when he won the Men’s Open category at The Spot Bouldering Series Gun Show Competition in September. Though they are technically local comps, Spot series comps have long been a proving ground for the nation’s up-and-coming talent and past competitors and winners include Daniel Woods, Paul Robinson, Matty Hong, Jon Cardwell, Rob D’Anastasio, Ian Dory, Ben Spannuth, Alex “socks” Johnson, Alex Puccio, Alex Johnson, and Lizzy Asher.
Coach Robyn quickly noticed Michael’s talent for and dedication to climbing, so in the Fall of 2011 she invited him to help coach her youth development program ABC for Kids.
Michael went on to have a successful competition season, making open finals at all 4 comps of the Spot Bouldering Series, taking 3rd at the 2011 Yank n’ Yard Pro Open, taking 14th in Men’s Open at the ABS 13 National Championships, and becoming the 2012 Male Junior ABS National Champion.
He also improved outside, climbing his first V12 with Authentic Battle Damage in Boulder Canyon and following it with a couple more 12s and his first V13, Free Range, also in Boulder Canyon. A video of that ascent can be seen on his new Team ABC Athlete Profile Page.
Michael’s passion for climbing and hard work ethic make him a valuable member of the ABC family, and since he has this year’s SCS Season as well as next year’s ABS and SBS Seasons before he ages out of Juniors, Robyn invited him to begin training with Team ABC Boulder as well as continue coaching ABC for Kids.
His first practice was last week, and everyone on Team ABC Boulder is psyched to welcome Michael to the team!
